I am a second year PhD student in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. I received my masters in Exercise Physiology, where I become skilled in managing randomized control trials and mentoring students. During my studies, I spent hours in exercise physiology labs and body composition rooms to study obesity and strength training in human participants. However, during my first year of PhD school, I was introduced to large observational data and coding for data management. To my surprise, my favorite courses during PhD school have been those from the Department of Biostatistics because I get more practice with SAS and R! For my PhD, I have decided to focus on becoming skilled in statistical methods for longitudinal data and data management for Medicare claims data. After my PhD, I hope to bridge my physiology education with large data management by studying biomarkers of health trajectories and health outcomes over long follow-up periods. My passion in research is to study physical function to help vulnerable populations regain or remain physically independent. I have a multi-disciplinary background which includes training in biotechnology, drug discovery, and a PhD in applied mathematics/computational biology. My professional career has mainly been about working on tough problems and creating value in environments where there is a lot of uncertainty and unknown. This is reflected in the fact that I have primarily worked either at a startup (as a founder and employee) trying to solve hard problems or in academia (postdoctoral work in Cambridge, UK and Edinburgh, UK) where I focussed on creating new knowledge in areas which were previously unexplored. The roles that I have worked in include, product development & management, business development, R&D (both hardware, biology & software startups) at companies and research institutes operating in bioengineering/synthetic biology and Education technology. In early 2019, I was recognised by Global Biotech Revolution (GBR) as one amongst 100 leaders of tomorrow in biotechnology.
